Drexel Theater, Bexley OhioBexley’s Drexel Theatre has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This distinction means that America finds the Drexel to be a historic place worthy of preservation.

“The Drexel has been a Bexley icon for decades, and it is a proud moment to see it take its rightful place on the National Register of Historic Places. The theatre is a valuable driver of economic development for our community, and a sentimental symbol of our rich history and commitment to the arts.”

– Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler

The theatre opened its doors in the late 1930s as a single-screen movie house, converting to multiple screening rooms nearly twenty-five years ago. Its become known as a home for independent and art house films. The Drexel is also known for its specialty programming like round-the-clock sci-fi and horror marathons.

The National Register is maintained by the National Park Service and the honor makes the iconic theatre eligible for special state and federal tax credits. This should makes potential renovations a bit more financially feasible. (The Drexel has hopes to renovate the marquee, lobby and a few of the inner theatres in 2016. (Currently, new restrooms are being added.)

Congrats to the Drexel!  (jj)
