Cleveland Cavaliers want your attention

The Cleveland Cavaliers would like your attention, but current NBA rules prevent them from seeking it.

The Cavs have a pretty respectable fanbase here in Columbus. In fact, TV ratings show that more than twice as many people in Columbus watch a Cavaliers game as opposed to watching our hometown Blue Jackets. So it would seem to the club that Cbus is an area of big potential. LeBron and company would love to step up marketing efforts here and try to sell more game tickets, more merchandise, everything. But current NBA regulations prevent them from doing so.

Under the rules, teams are not allowed to market their brand outside a 75-mile radius of their home city. The goal of that guideline is basically to keep one team from trying to poach another team’s fans. League officials are now considering changes that would possibly broaden the permissible range for a team’s marketing to include that club’s entire state.  Any changes would require approval by team owners.
