County officials injured in separate bike accidents
Let’s just say if there’s ever a Tour de Franklin County cycling event, Ron O’Brien and Paul Herbert should both sit out the race.
The Franklin County prosecutor and the Franklin County municipal court judge were both injured on Sunday in separate bike accidents. O’Brien was riding to Whetstone Park when he rode across a traffic-calming device and lost his balance. Two people witnessed the crash and called 911. Paramedics took the county’s top lawyer to the hospital where doctors found him to have six broken ribs, a separated left shoulder and a partially-collapsed lung. (He is expected to be released from the hospital today.)
In an interesting twist, the bike that O’Brien was riding when he crashed formerly belonged to Judge Paul Herbert. Herbert on Sunday was entering Glacier Ridge Trail when he maneuvered to avoid some other bikes that were just lying near the entrance. <CRASH!> The judge suffered a cracked rib, a chipped right elbow and scattered other bumps and bruises. He was treated at the ER and back behind the bench on Monday. (jj)
