More competition for Columbus Crew SC
In 1994, Columbus was named as one of the founding cities for Major League Soccer. Today with the team rebranded (Columbus Crew SC) and their home venue renamed (MAPFRE Stadium), fans received word of new competition in the growing league.
The MLS on Wednesday announced an expansion team for Minnesota. The club will begin MLS play in 2018 and the league is eyeing a 24th team by the 2020 season. So far, no official word on which conference will be home to Minnesota. (The Crew SC plays in the East.)
Side note…Minnesota’s new team is called Minnesota United FC. The MLS already has a “United” team playing in D.C., so the league is either planning on doubling-up on the unity theme or someone will have to change their name. I recommend that they wrestle for it. (jj)
