5-year-old Chad Carr is the grandson of longtime Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr. In September of last year, Chad was diagnosed with a rare and inoperable form of brain cancer. He was given 9 months to live. With his condition deteriorating, his family brought in hospice care this week.
Hearing the news, Barbara Matta (wife of Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta) had an idea. She suggested bringing the little boy some early Christmas cheer.
Armed with that idea, Thad Matta and his staff joined with Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein and his staff to have the young Carr’s home decorated for the holiday. As the family continues to deal with tragedy and sadness, the rival teams came together to provide holiday lights and yard decorations…and a bit of joy to a family desperately in need of some.
Chad’s mom offered this message on social media:
Wow! Special thanks to the michigan men’s basketball coaches and staff and the Ohio state men’s basketball team’s coaches and staff. They came together to do this for chad. Amazing!!!! Love and thanks to you all!! Bigger than the rivalry!!
