A proposal approved by the NCAA’s five power conferences means that Ohio State will begin expanding financial assistance to students on athletic scholarships. The 1,050 student athletes (across 36 sports) will be able to take advantage of additional assistance to help cover the costs of travel back-and-forth to campus, dorm deposits and other random expenditures (laundry, for example). These additional funds will be made available as “cost-of-attendance” scholarships. The expected cost to the university is in the neighborhood of $1.6 million each year. (jj)
