Opinion: Can Columbus, Ohio, Become a Sports Capital?
Later this month, Columbus is going to be the nation’s hockey hub when the NHL All-Star Game kicks-off. And Sam Sturgis, for The Atlantic‘s “City Lab” is asking one question: can Columbus be a sports capital?
The Arena District will see about 140,000 ice hockey fans for the NHL All-Star Weekend, which also features a snow slide, an ice skating rink, live music and fire pits where kids (or adults) can roast s’mores. And despite hockey’s lackluster ratings, Sturgis says, “They’re [Columbus] eager to show off the city’s burgeoning urban culture to first-time visitors. In fact, the NHL All-Star game may be Columbus’ best opportunity to grab the title of Middle America’s Most Underrated Sports Hub.”
