Central Ohio Film Critics name Best of 2014

With awards season underway, the Central Ohio Film Critics Association has announced its choices for the best of 2014.  The voting rights historical drama Selma was named best film (an obvious slight to 22 Jump Street). David Oyelowo’s turn as Martin Luther King Jr earned him the distinction as Best Actor with the film’s Ava DuVernary named Best Director.  Essie Davis was selected as Best Actress for her role in the Australian psychological horror movie The Babadook.  Other winners:

  • Best Supporting Actor – J.K. Simmons, Whiplash
  • Best Supporting Actress – Tilda Swinton, Snowpiercer
  • Best Ensemble – The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Actor of the Year – Jake Gyllenhaal, Enemy and Nightcrawler
  • Best Animated Movie – The Lego Movie
  • Best Overlooked Film – The Babadook
  • Best Foreign Language Film – We Are the Best! (Sweden, Denmark)
  • Best Documentary – Finding Vivian Maier
  • Breakthrough Film Artist – Ava DuVernary, Selma
  • Best Cinematography – Robert Yeoman, The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Best Film Editing – Tom Cross, Whiplash
  • Best Adapted Screenplay – Graham Moore, The Imitation Game
  • Best Original Screenplay – Paul Webb, Selma
