Columbus radio station claims it’s a ‘house of worship’

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Ohio Supreme Court is considering a Columbus radio station’s claim that they should be exempt from paying property taxes as a nonprofit business. The State of Ohio begs to differ.

WCVO-FM (now known as 104.9 The River) has been around for more than 40 years. In the beginning, the programming was Christian Talk and it was funded by contributions. For more than a decade now, the station’s format has been adult contemporary Christian music and the River runs mostly off of dollars generated through advertisers.

In recent years, the station moved its operations from Gahanna to New Albany and, at around the same time, it lost its exemption from paying property taxes. The River claims that their programming is a form of public worship and therefore they should get to continue their tax emption.

The state wants what it believes is its money.  (jj)
