Interview: (614) native / Goosebumps author…no fan of governor’s apples

shutterstock_292140977Columbus native R.L. Stine is the man behind the highly successful Goosebumps series of children’s fright fiction. Since the first book was published in 1992, hundreds more have followed with total sales of more than 400 million copies.

Stine grew up in Bexley, graduated from Ohio State and moved to New York before hitting it big.

In a new interview with the popular Neaotrama blog, Stine talks about his success and inspiration. He also offers this gem about what it was like being a kid trick-or-treating in Bexley.

It was great. People didn’t give you healthy stuff in those days so you didn’t have to worry. Except, I used to live in this tiny little house that was one block from the Ohio governor’s mansion so we used to trick-or-treat there and every year he gave out apples. We used to take them and heave them down the driveway. – R.L. Stine

My best guess is that the governor with the offending apples was Frank Lausche (D) who served from 1945 to 1947 and again from 1949 to 1957.

*Fun facts. Voters tossed Lausche out of the governor’s mansion in 1947…much like Stine tossed the apples down the man’s driveway. Lausche returned to the office in 1949. In 1956, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. The whole apple thing didn’t seem to hold him back at all. (Lausche was Ohio’s first Catholic governor.)
