Is there a future for Ohio Deli?
Many have wondered what the future holds for the iconic Ohio Deli…and if there will be a future for it at all. A fire raced through the South High Street restaurant in December of last year leaving the longtime home of the Dagwood Challenge in a pile of ash and rubble. Owners Eric and Heather Hejduk vowed to rebuild. The property has since been raised, but so far, fans looking for resurrection have been left disappointed. Records from the Health Department show that Ohio Deli’s food license expired several months ago and the Hejduks have not applied for a new one. A June post from the restaurant’s Facebook page offers this:
First of all we would like to thank all of the Ohio Deli Faithful who have been so loyal for so many years and who continue to be loyal even after the tragic night when building caught on fire and burnt to the ground. Secondly demolition and rebuilding costs have exceeding the original projections. A decision has not yet been made regarding whether we rebuild or relocate. We would like to keep the “Dagwood’ legacy alive. As decisions are made we will gladly keep everyone updated. Once again Thank you!!

Meineke Car Care Center is looking to develop the property, having put in an application to do so about six weeks ago. So at this point, it looks like the Ohio Deli will not be returning to its previous location if it returns at all. (jj)
