Jeni’s re-reopening on Saturday

She’s back again.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams announced plans to reopen shops Saturday (6/20) at 5pm.

I’m happy to announce we’re reopening our shops this weekend—in time to celebrate the Columbus Pride Festival, one of our favorite events of the year. Our shops will open at 5 pm on Saturday across the country. The menu will be limited at first, featuring a mix of our ice creams, frozen yogurts, and sorbet—all made for us by our partners at Smith Dairy—along with sundaes, floats, and sauces. We’ll be adding more flavors to the menu in the coming weeks.

Jeni’s accepted Smith’s production help when returning from the first listeria closure last month.

It’s been one week since word that the listeria bacteria was again discovered inside the production kitchen of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. It was news that meant the closing of Jeni’s ice cream shops for the second time in two months. Bauer served as the keynote guest at Thursday night’s Corporate Caring Awards from Columbus Business First where she took park in a Q&A session led the Columbus Foundation’s Doug Kridler. Responding to a question about all of the notes of encouragement from supporters that were left on the shop’s door in the Short North, she says that she read them all and that she can feel the love and support from the company’s fans. She says that support is a lot to measure up to.

“We know we have a lot of work to do to live up to that.”

– Jeni Britton Bauer

She went on to say that the ordeal has changed the company and the individuals inside. The change has been a positive one, she says, and it’s made everyone “stronger.”(jj)

Previous: Reaction to Jeni’s new scoop of troubles 6/15/15

Days after announcing the discovery of the harmful bacteria listeria in their production kitchen again, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream shops remain closed. These have not been the best days for Jeni’s. In April, the company first announced a listeria finding, issued a massive product recall and closed all of their shops, much to the disappointment of the legions of Jeni’s fans. To be clear, no one was made sick from eating the ice cream and the recall and closures were voluntary. After making substantial changes in their kitchen and to production procedures, the ice cream maker returned to production on May 13th and reopened stores nine days later. Throughout the closure, Jeni’s was almost universally supported. Most gave the company high marks for moves that were viewed as putting consumer safety about the economic bottom line. So the question with a new discovery and another closure is…will customers give the company a third chance? Judging from Facebook, some will not. Others cannot wait for the doors to open again.

Bravo for your transparency! And we will wait patiently for your ice cream to be available again! – Amy Felax Wilde

NOOOO!!!!!! Goodness you guys can’t catch a break! I really love that you stand behind your product and don’t want to see anything happen to your customers. I’ll be waiting patiently for the shops to re-open again! – Corinne Chain

I’ve only eaten your ice cream a few times. Each time, it was delicious. I love that you’re based in Columbus. And I love how responsive you’ve been to all of this. You’re a good company. I will, most definitely, be buying your ice cream when you get back up and running. Please continue being awesome. – Randall Stephens

I’ll be waiting right outside the Bexley shop the moment you re-open, just as I did last time. Nothing can ever change the love I have for Jeni’s. – Jake Wollner

I will always be a loyal customer! Can’t wait until you reopen! – Rachel Kornegay

How about you? Were you a Jeni’s customer before? Will you return?  (jj)

Previous: Return of listeria – Jeni’s closes again 6/12/15

Just weeks after resuming ice cream production and reopening their shops, Jeni’s has once again found the listeria bacteria in their production kitchen and closed shops again.

We have found Listeria in our production kitchen again. We have stopped making ice cream and are investigating where and how it may have re-entered the facility. Since resuming production on May 13, we have been testing every batch of ice cream we have made and holding it until we learned that the testing did not detect any Listeria. So it is with complete confidence that we can say all of the ice cream that has been served in our shops since reopening on May 22 has been safe and is 100% Listeria-free. We are closing our scoop shops temporarily because we don’t have enough ice cream to keep them stocked. We hope to be back very soon.

– John Lowe, CEO of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Jeni’s faithful customers rallied behind the company through its recent struggles….a massive recall, the ceasing of production and the closing of shops. During that period, the ice cream maker said that they were reconfiguring production procedures and overhauling their kitchens…taking the steps needed to guarantee that their product was safe. In announcing their return to production last month, founder Jeni Britton Bauer said:

…it’s been a bumpy road getting back up, and there were times we didn’t know if we were going to make it.

Once again, the Jeni’s faithful are left with empty spoons and the hopes that their favorite flavors will soon return.  (jj)
