Ahead…but slipping

The march has begun…candidates entering the field of battle for 2016 and the White House. Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently became the first to officially enter the race for the Republican nomination. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is expected to announce next week with Florida Senator Marco Rubio following on April 13th. At least half-a-dozen others are seriously looking at the contest as well. On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the perceived front runner, is rumored to be planning an April launch for her campaign as well. In polling, no Democrat appears to pose a serious challenge to the former first lady. And she leads her would-be Republican rivals as well…but her edge appears to be slipping.

A new survey from Quinnipiac shows Clinton with a 5-point advantage over her closest rival, Rand Paul (46 – 41). Polling last month had Hillary with a 12-point lead. Other results from the poll show Clinton ahead, but again, her lead has shrunk from previous polls:

  • 47 – 38 percent over former Florida Governor Jeb Bush
  • 45 – 39 percent over New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
  • 49 – 39 percent over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee

Match-ups not previously polled:

  • 47 – 38 percent over Marco Rubio
  • 49 – 38 percent over Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker
  • 48 – 38 percent over Ted Cruz
