Boenher had planned to leave Washington at the end of October, but that was pending the election of a new House Speaker. Congressman Kevin McCarthy surprised most of his colleagues today when he dropped out of the contest for the gig today. The election of a new leader for the House of Representatives has been delayed (no new date set). Boehner says that he’ll remain in the post until a replacement is selected.  (jj)

Republican House Speaker John Boehner has announced his intention to resign from Congress at the end of October.

Boehner is in his 13th term representing Ohio’s 8th congressional district. He was his party’s unanimous choice for speaker in 2011 following the Republicans takeover of the House of Representatives. At various points in the last few years, there has been speculation as to whether or not Boehner could hold onto his post. Many thought that his party would throw him overboard, but the man who stood third-in-line to the presidency continued to preside over the House.

It has been 26 years since a sitting Speaker of the House resigned from Congress. Members will need to hold a vote to determine Boehner’s replacement as head of the chamber.  (jj)
