EPA called in to investigate contaminated park
Arsenic, lead, and mercury are the toxins lurking in the soil near Saunders Park in east Columbus. And it’s no wonder given that the park used to be the site of a fertilizer plant. About nine acres of the park’s land have been fenced off and the city is testing roughly seven local residents to see if they have high levels of arsenic. State health officials found high levels of arsenic in park’s soil last year, as well as in eight surrounding properties.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will also evaluate the contaminated properties around the park and determine whether it’s a candidate for a federal cleanup. (deb)
