Lawsuit claims state fails to allow blind to vote independent(ly)
A group called Disability Rights Ohio has filed a lawsuit against the state concerning the rights of blind people to cast their votes in private. They say that the system is set up in such a way that vision-impaired citizens are often prevented from being able to cast secret ballots in the Buckeye State.
According to the suit, blind voters are not always treated equally in the process and are often left without the ability to cast absentee ballots in private and in an independent fashion. Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has issued a statement regarding the newly filed lawsuit:
Ohio is one of the easiest states in the nation in which to cast a ballot and we are always looking for ways to continue making improvements. Vision-impaired voters have numerous opportunities to participate in elections, from using a voting system in place at every polling location that allows them to mark their ballot without needing anyone’s assistance to requesting both a Republican and Democrat election official come and help them cast an absentee ballot from the comfort of their own home.
