The $10 makeover: Female face coming to cash

The $10 makeover: Female face coming to cash

One day after a local congresswoman introduced an act to put a woman’s face on U.S. paper currency for the first time ever, the Treasury Department announced that they will do just that. On Tuesday, Representative Joyce Beatty (D) introduced the Woman on the Twenty Act as part of an effort to have the federal government make such a change and possibly replace Andrew Jackson’s image with that of Harriet Tubman.

Wednesday night, the Treasury announced that they will put a woman’s face on the twenty ten dollar bill in the year 2020. This mean’s that Andrew Jackson is safe, but Alexander Hamilton’s fate is suddenly in question. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew says that while a woman’s face will be most prominent on the ten, Hamilton’s image will still be there in some capacity. He will either be somewhere on that same bill, or it’s possible that there will be a separate run of tens featuring just Hamilton.

No decision has been made just yet as to which woman will grace the currency. And, FYI, the 2020 date coincides with the 100th anniversary of women constitutionally being given the right to vote.  (jj)

U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D) went to the well of the House of Representatives on Tuesday to introduce the Woman on the Twenty Act. Beatty cited a recent online survey in which more than a million people voiced their desire to see a female face on the twenty dollar bill. Her proposal would give the Secretary of the Treasury the power to make such a change, displacing former President Andrew Jackson from the position that he’s held since 1928.

Since the first general circulation of paper currency in this country, no woman has ever held the honor of being featured on paper money. And I would say to Secretary Lew that you need look no further than the people’s choice winner, Harriet Tubman, for inspiration. In her words, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer.” In her dreams she always had a vision. More than ever, my vision is a redesign of the twenty dollar bill.
