While Kasich considers, Rand announces a run

As Governor Kasich considers entering the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, the competition continues to heat up.

On Tuesday, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul announced his candidacy for president. (The first-term senator becomes the second official candidate to declare, with Senator Ted Cruz having announced last month.) Paul’s announcement came first online, and later at a rally in Louisville. With a message of “defeat the Washington machine, unleash the American dream,” the senator took aim at leadership from both major political parties.

“Big government and debt doubled under a Republican administration and is now tripling under Barack Obama’s watch. We’ve come to take our country back from the special interests that use Washington as their personal piggy bank.”

Paul comes in to the contest with his own base of support and hopes to tap into that of his father’s. Former Congressman Ron Paul ran unsuccessfully for president three times (1988, 2008, 2012). A recent FOX News poll shows that Rand Paul has some work to do after having placed ninth in a survey of likely Republican voters.  (jj)
