380-Now? Date set for new area code debut

We’re running out of numbers.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) says that we’re running out of phone numbers and, because of that, the area is getting a new area code. PUCO has now announced that January 30th, 2016 is the date when 380 will begin its existence inside of 614. The two area codes will basically overlap each other in the same geographical region. Requests for additional lines or new service will come with the new 380 code.

So what does this mean for all of us 614 types? Starting on January 30th, everyone will have to dial telephone numbers using eleven digits. For example, if you’re a 614 person and your best friend down the street is also a 614 person, when you call them, you’re not going to be able to just dial seven digits. You’ll have to call 1-614-and then the number.

Does it sound like a hassle? A bit. But when you consider that most people these days have the numbers that they call most frequently programmed into the contact list of their cell phone anyway, you’re not really doing all that much dialing in the first place. You may have to update and edit contacts, but it’s not going to be something that should cause any major headaches.

On a personal note, I’m just wondering if I’ll need new letterhead.  (jj)
