416050_10200133549603559_707562052_oCheri Mitchell, who served until very recently as the executive director of BalletMet Columbus, was killed on Tuesday…struck by a car while jogging near her Granville home. Police say that she was in a designated crosswalk when she was hit by the vehicle. She died later during surgery at Grant Medical Center. There were no reports of injury to the driver of the car. That person has not yet been charged but the investigation of the accident is ongoing.

Mitchell was an obvious force in the local arts community. She served 8 years as the managing director of CATCO before beginning a more than 13-year run leading BalletMet. She retired from that role just a few months ago, but remained active on the Columbus scene. She was recently named board president of the touring performance company A Portable Theatre. Her many friends and the groups that she championed are remembering her today.

We are devastated by the loss of our dear friend Cheri Mitchell, who served for more than 13 years as our Executive Director. She was a beloved member of the BalletMet family, fearlessly leading the company through times of hardship and growth. We cherish the memories we have of her, and our hearts go out to her family in this difficult time.

– BalletMet Columbus

During some of our most seminal years, Cheri Mitchell was the lifeblood of CATCO, touching and molding all aspects of the company. No task was too big or too small. For Cheri, getting her hands dirty, sometimes literally, was never an exception, it was the rule. With profound gratitude for her indefatigable service to this organization, CATCO deeply mourns her passing and sends its wholehearted sympathies to her family. She will forever be a member of the CATCO family.

Cheri Mitchell was a talented arts leader and a good friend to many of us. I am heartbroken at this news and my thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
