Ban on showing the bird

The Ohio Department of Agriculture took steps this week in an effort to keep the state free of bird flu. Officials have put a ban on the showing and exhibition of LIVE birds. This includes events like auctions and county fairs. The virus was first confirmed in the U.S. last year and since then more than 44 million bird have been infected. The state says that its important to protect our poultry industry.

While most understand the concern, many farmers are left disappointed by an inability to show off their birds.

With 28 million laying chickens, Ohio is the second largest producer of eggs in the country.  (jj)
