Dog park reopens, no poison discovered

11707838_10207181633081681_5967700055779713377_oOfficials have now reopened Victorian Village’s Wheeler Memorial Dog Park.

The park was closed for a week after a woman reported her dog falling sick and later dying after a visit to the site. She said that a veterinarian had told her that her pooch had been poisoned. Unsure, but suspecting that her dog may have picked up the poison at Wheeler, she notified officials and her neighbors. Out of caution, the park was closed until it could be confirmed that the area was safe. An inspection of the grounds and a safe test result on a water sample taken at the park showed no sign of poison.

The dog’s owner had posted warning signs at the park and shared the alert online as well. In addition to the story of what happened to her dog, she also said that two other dogs had recently died after visits to Wheeler. Authorities say that they have no reports of those other deaths.

Early results of an autopsy performed this week on the woman’s dog show that he may have died from pneumonia.  (jj)

The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department has closed Wheeler Memorial Dog Park in Victorian Village pending an investigation of possible poisoning.

Last week, a woman reported that her 10-month old puppy got sick and died after a visit to the park. Ashley Lyon says that when her dog (Jude) took ill, she rushed him to the veterinarian. She was told that it appeared her dog had consumed poisoned. Jude died on Wednesday. Ashley says that she can’t be sure that Jude ingested the poison at the park, but she notified officials as a precaution. (Ashley says that two other dogs, recent visitors to Wheeler, have also died.) She posted a warning to dog owners (pictured here) on her Facebook page.

The Recreation and Parks Department says that they have no reason to believe that Jude’s death had anything to do with the dog park, but that Wheeler will remain closed until they can be sure.

Wheeler Memorial Dog Park recently reopened after having been closed for four months for grass reseeding.  (jj)
