New STOPs coming to railroad crossings

The Columbus Dispatch reports that roughly 1,000 railroad crossings in Ohio will soon see new signs posted. Many crossings that currently have signs instructing drivers to yield will receive signs telling drivers to stop.

The move follows a provision in the state’s 2013 transportation budget that called for the changes. A review by the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Rail Development Commission determined where the changes should be made. Locally, 11 crossings in Franklin County will see newly-installed octagons…6 of those will be in Columbus.

Railroad companies are responsible for ordering and posting the signs. Those companies will then be reimbursed by the state.  (jj)
