UPDATE: Painting the picture for OSU’s art district
OSU has some serious ($200 million) plans for its proposed arts district. The new area will refocus the school’s arts programs and offerings into one “geographical gateway” along N High St. The project will also yeild expansions for the Wexner Center, Weigel Hall, and the Department of Theatre (which would move closer to N High St). A steering committee has been created to review and recommend details for the new arts district.
I wonder how long it’ll take for OSU to come up with fancy name for their arts district vs how long it’ll take students to come up with their own, probably less nice, name for it. (deb)
Other recommendations:
- Open plaza on the front steps of the Wexner Center
- Four new performance space
- 600-seat proscenium theater
- 250-seat thrust stage theater
- 125-seat black box theater
- 60-seat experimental venue
- Remolding Mershon Auditorium
- Two new/remodeled rehearsal spaces for the School of Music

OSU’s art district: major changes for High St. and 15th Ave
OSU is looking at creating a distinct arts district on campus, and do so means some major changes to the areas along High St. and 15th Ave. The university’s Campus Partners for Community Urban Redevelopment affiliate has put forth new plans for mixed-use space that’ll include a public square, student housing, offices, a hotel, and stores. Details are still scarce, but one thing is certain: for OSU to continue, 15th Ave. will have to be rerouted so that it’s perpendicular to High St.
So basically, more construction is in Columbus’ future. Who ever would have guessed? (deb)
