Proposal: Franklin County inmates to work at animal shelter

943698_473720912697952_328682160_nThe Columbus Dispatch reports that a proposed plan by officials at the Franklin County jail would allow a limited number of female inmates to spend some time outside of their concrete walls to do work at the county’s animal shelter.

The program would allow nonviolent female inmates serving sentences of thirty days or more to travel to the Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center to provide laundry services. The shelter generates as many as 30 loads of laundry each day, so there’s plenty of work to do. At start, inmates would not have direct contact with the animals. The unpaid inmate workers would be supervised by a corrections officer.

A similar program is already in place for nonviolent male inmates allowing them to collect litter along roadsides. (The jail says that they cannot combine the male and female inmates into the same program.)

A spokesperson for the animal shelter tells the Dispatch that the program would be rewarding for the inmates and save money for the county.

Franklin County commissioners would need to sign off on the idea.  (jj)
