Buckeye Lake residents say ‘just add water’
Its a new study…with a different result.
A recent study of the dam at Buckeye Lake shows that more water could be held without putting people at risk. The water level was lowered to winter levels in response to a survey from the Army Corp of Engineers showing that the dam was at risk for a catastrophic failure. Governor Kasich has since ordered construction of a new dam. In the meantime, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has ordered the levels lowered. Residents say that this hurts businesses including marinas and other establishments that rely on the lake to stay alive.
The new study from Rizzo Associates shows that there has been no erosion of the dam since they last conducted a comprehensive study in 1997. The company says that water levels could be raised without causing any danger to the area. People in the area say that the addition of just a few feet of water could make all the difference to their economic situation. (jj)
