A man was shot and killed yesterday at Port Columbus, after lunging at police officers while armed with a knife.

Earlier that day (around 12:45 p.m.), a man attempted to purchase a plan ticket with a woman’s ID. According to a release from the airport, “Airline personnel became suspicious, refused to sell him a ticket, and alerted Port Columbus police.” Around the same time, police where also looking into an SUV that had been parked illegally. And had called Jim Shriner, a tow-truck driver, to move the SUV.

The two reports came together when the man walked up to the SUV. He initially spoke to an officer, then took out a knife and lunged at the officer and attempted to stab him. The officer fired at the man, who dropped to the ground, but got back up and continued towards to officer. A backup officer responded and the man moved towards him, which caused the second officer to retreat backwards towards the terminal entrance where a third officer was. The third officer shot the man several times and killed him.

The officers approached the man to access his injuries and discovered multiple knives in his possession. They also discovered items that led them to contact the Columbus Fire Bomb Squad, who searched the man’s car and removed suspicious items from the scene.

No bystanders, or any of the officers were injured. The Columbus Division of Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation of the shooting and surveillance footage is being reviewed. (deb)
