Previously May 20, 2015
Takata Corp. has issued a recall for 33.8 million defective air bags – making this the largest auto recall. The announcement came after several rounds between Takata, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Department of Transportation (DOT) over their defective air bags.
A chemical that inflates the air bags has been exploding with too much force, blowing apart a metal inflator; sending shrapnel into the passenger side. The defective air bags have caused over 100 injuries and at least six deaths.
Over 17 million cars have been recalled in the US, from 11 automakers. The NHSTA says that car-owners with defective Takata air bags will get notices in the mail and should *immediately* get the car fixed. However, if you don’t want to wait on the postal service, you can check online: https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ by providing your VIN number. (deb)
