New tighty whities enhance security at Franklin County Jail

When you think about the underwear business, what names come to mind? Hanes? Fruit of the Loom? Calvin Klein? The Franklin County Jail?

County commissioners approved a plan this week to put the Franklin County Jail into the underwear trade. It seems that one ongoing problem identified by jailers has been friends and families sneaking various forms of contraband (weapons, drugs, etc) in with underwear packages left for incarcerated loved ones. To end this, the county has now entered into a one-year deal with a company from New York state to have them provide undergarments that the the jail can list for sale in the prisoner commissary.

We’re talking about socks, t-shirts, boxers, briefs (men’s and women’s) and sports bras. Forget about designer colors. Plain white is the rule. The jail will sell the items to inmates at a cost low-enough for them to afford, but at a price high-enough for the county to make a profit. Inmates have accounts to which loved ones can deposit funds and the prisoners can pay for various things (now including underwear). For inmates with no funds, it is unclear whether or not undies will be provided at no cost. They may just have to go without.  (jj)
