Update: Gunman identified in Wexner Center shooting

614now Staff

It was a dark Sunday morning for folks at the Wexner Center with a former employee returning to the campus venue to take his own life.

Just after 11:15am, security personnel at the Wexner Center notified authorities of a shooting inside one of the galleries. Wexner security staff evacuated two patrons and a handful of others that were on site. Campus Police and Columbus Police responded to the scene inside the gallery and found the body of a former center employee. The man had vandalized some of the displayed artwork before shooting himself. He was dead when the officers arrived.

The deceased man has been identified as 63-year-old Dean Sturgis…a former campus security guard. Sturgis resigned from his position in 2009 just as he was about to be fired.

The Wexner Center is closed today. There is no word just yet as to when it will reopen. Authorities say that the facility will remain closed until their on-scene investigation is complete and the vandalism is repaired.
