Veterans Memorial: More money, more problems

Veterans Memorial: More money, more problems

While it’s pretty easy to say “what goes up, must come down,” it’s a lot harder to make that happen – that’s what the people behind the demolition of Vet’s Memorial are finding out. Yesterday, the county commissioners were told that it’s going to take several more months, and double the cost, to demolish the building and clear the land. The building’s foundation is supporting part of a miles-long floodwall that protects the neighborhood west of there from potential Scioto River floods.

The commissioners are expected to approve contract extensions for the companies overseeing the post-demolition work next week. This added work brings the cost of the project to $2.8 million, but the total cost to clear the land comes to about $4.8 million.

Still, it doesn’t seem like anyone is really surprised that a Columbus construction project is going to take longer than expected. (deb)

Veterans Memorial: Bringing down the house

One of the very first concerts that I ever saw was at Veterans Memorial.  It was a long time ago.  It was Rick Astley.  Its not something that I like to talk about outside of therapy.

Over the years, Veterans Memorial has hosted many concerts, events and shows and, of course, it has served as a tribute to those that have served in the U.S. armed forces.  On Tuesday, its demolition began.  Crews with the aide of a 100-ton excavator tore into the side of the building bringing reality to the long-talked-about plans to rip the place down.  Destruction is expected to cost around $900,000 and be completed by the end of March.  The site will then be handed over to the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation.  A new $55 million Veterans Memorial and Museum is planned.

*For the record, I also saw the Pixies at Vets Memorial.  So my tastes evolved.  Don’t judge me.  (jj)
