What’s wrong with the water now?

What’s wrong with the water now?

Residents have been calling the city to complain about their water this week.

It doesn’t taste right.

It doesn’t smell right.

The shorter answer to these complaints? It’s fine. Well, it’s not going to hurt you, anyway. People who get their water from the Hap Cremean Water Plant on Morse Road may have noticed a slight issue with the taste and smell of their water recently and the city is aware. The problem is an algae called Anabaena and they’ve seen it before. Anabaena was an issue in the water in late 2013 and early 2014. This time around its gotten into the water because of the heavy rains that the state has experienced in recent weeks. Higher water levels have pushed the algae over the dam and into the water plant intake area. The city is treating for it with disinfectants and extra powdered-activated carbon. Those chemicals kill the algae, but they do alter the smell and taste of the water. The issue affects approximately 500,000 residents north of I-70.

Again, the city says even though the water seems off, it’s perfectly fine to drink. There’s no cause for concern and everything should be back to normal within a couple of days.  (jj)
