That’s one way to get your message across

OSU student Harley Skorpenske, who’s pursuing a career in medicine, has gone viral. Or rather, a mean note left on her car has gone viral. Last week, Skorpenske parked outside a campus drugstore in a handicap spot, but not before putting her handicap placard up in the window. When she came out of the store, there was a note waiting for her.

you should be ashamed!! When you take a handicap spot, an actual disabled person suffers. You were not raised as you should have been.

Skorpenske says she agrees with the note’s author that those spots should be used by people with disabilities. But she stressed that sometimes disabilities aren’t visible, like hers. She was diagnosed with systemic Lupus when she was a teen. The autoimmune disease has left her with some hearing loss and difficulty breathing and walking.

Her mother posted the note on Facebook, where it quickly swept the internet. Both Skorpenske and her mother hope it helps people think about snap judgements and what it means to have a disability. (deb)
