Ginger was born at the Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens in 1975. From there she went to Cleveland where, in three pregnancies, she gave birth to six cubs. In 1987, she took up residency at the Columbus Zoo. Here, she met another bear (Growly), and the two welcomed two more cubs…Sugar and Spicey. Growly passed in 2002.
In her later years, the zoo says that her favorite pastimes included relaxing in her pool. They also says that she enjoyed treats including pudding, apples, rainbow sorbet and ginger. (Don’t we all?)
At the time of her death, Ginger had exceeded the average life expectancy of a female grizzly by a wide margin. She was 40 years old. (jj)
