CPD continues ban on head scarves for officers

In a time when more police departments are making accommodations to increase recruitment levels around the country, the Columbus Police Department announced today that it would keep in place its ban on head scarves for officers. Mayor Mike Coleman asked the department to look into the matter earlier this year. The move was in response to a Columbus Dispatch story about a local Somali-American Muslim woman who dropped out of the police academy due to the ban.

In the end Police Chief Kim Jacobs decided that when officers meet with members of the public, it should be as a bit of a blank slate…as someone clear of political or religious affiliation.

It’s fair to say, this is probably not the end of the issue.  (jj)
