Kasich’s leftover ball money goes to good use
Ohio First Lady Karen Kasich this week announced plans to donate nearly $188,000 to be divided among eight charities. The money is leftover from funds raised for her husband’s second inauguration. Nearly $1.2 million was raised for the festivities and associated hoopla. By law, the remaining funds must be returned to donors or donated to charity. (Sorry, donors.)
As for who gets the money, the breakdown is as follows:
- $55,000 for After-School All-Stars. This group helps to provide after-school academic support, mentoring, and fitness direction in a safe environment.
- $55,000 for Live Healthy Appalachia. The Athens-area group plans to use the donation to grow their Live Healthy Kids program designed to teach kids about healthy eating and provide them with experiences in preparing and cooking healthy foods.’
- $22,728 goes to Local Matters. This group teaches central Ohio adults and children about healthy food…how to grow it, how to cook it, how to buy it without breaking the bank.
- $50,000 to be split by five organizations that send non-perishable meals home with economically disadvantaged kids at the end of the school week. These programs are in Ashtabula, Butler, Jackson, Marion and Allen Counties.
