Mitt says “no,” but favors two from Ohio for President

614now Staff

2012 Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney told supporters today that he will not seek the party nomination in 2016. Reports say that Mitt felt confident that he could again secure the delegates needed to win, but two factors persuaded him to sit the race out.  (1) Having also run in 2008, he did not want to put his family through the rigors of a third campaign…and (2) He felt that Hillary Clinton, if she runs and goes unchallenged for the Democratic nomination, would be a tough general election opponent against a bruised GOP nominee.

Those close to Romney say that while he doesn’t think much of those thought to be the likeliest to seek the nomination, there are two men that he thinks quite highly of…Ohio Governor John Kasich and Ohio’s junior U.S. Senator Rob Portman. Portman has declared that he is not a 2016 presidential candidate and is instead running for re-election to the Senate. Kasich has given no serious indication as to whether or not he is actively considering a run for president.  (jj)
