Strickland’s hot start in senate race

614now Staff

A lot of people are talking about Ohio politics today. That’s the result of a new Quinnipiac survey that shows that if the election was held today, former Governor Ted Strickland (D) would defeat incumbent Rob Portman (R) in the race for Portman’s senate seat…by nine points. (The margin is really what seems to have people talking.) Portman’s campaign manager Corry Bliss is among those with something to say:

“This poll shows one thing and one thing only, Ohio is doing so much better since Ted Strickland left office that people forgot what an awful governor he was.”

In the poll, Strickland wins a larger percentage of Democrats than Portman wins of Republicans. So he has more of his own people backing him. Strickland also leads by 18-points among independents.

How important are these results? Honestly, not that important. The election is more than a year and a half away…and Strickland still has a primary challenger to contend with in Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld. Still, this got Rob Portman’s attention, so game on.  (jj)
