rosa-parksThe State of Ohio marks Rosa Parks Day today. Some states mark the occasion in February on Mrs. Parks’ birthday. Ohio marks it today (12/1), the date that the African-American woman from Alabama refused to give up her bus seat to a white man.

Parks had originally sat in the front of the colored section in the rear of the bus, but when the whites area up front filled up, she was told to move further back. She moved over, but refused to move back and was arrested. The event was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. And it happened 60 years ago today.

To commemorate the event, COTA, Ohio State and Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D) will host a special event this Thursday at COSI. A special forum will be held featuring OSU President Michael Drake and Michigan Congressman John Conyers (D).
