Amazon begins collecting Ohio sales tax today

Amazon made the news official on Friday. The company will place new data centers in Dublin, Hilliard and New Albany. This means somewhere north of 1,000 new jobs. Meanwhile, Buckeye consumers of the online retailer should get ready to pay just a little more at checkout. Beginning today, Amazon is now collecting sales tax on all internet purchases made by Ohioans. Governor John Kasich says that he hopes the added revenue will provide a way to lower other forms of taxes on Ohio residents.  (jj)

Amazon Web Services had long been trying to put their new data center in Orange Township, but it was apparently  not to be. The land that Amazon wanted to build on required rezoning and neighbors had issues with ‘noise’ being right at the top of the list. On Monday, the township was notified that the company has now made other arrangements.

Hello, New Albany! New Albany’s city council voted in favor last week of a tax incentive in hopes of luring the data center. That plan has apparently worked. Amazon will now build the new project on land already owned in the area by a subsidiary of the company.  (jj)
