Arena works out deal with school board over property tax issue
With their 15-year property tax abatement expiring, the owners of Nationwide Arena have worked out a deal with the Columbus City Schools district that seem to make both sides happy. As the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority pushes the idea that the arena should be exempt from the need to pay property taxes, the school board has agreed to accept payments of $586,000 each year from the arena and an allowance to use the facility several times each year for various events.
The school district otherwise would stand to receive a large chunk of the property tax collected. But because the value of the arena is in questions, it’s unclear just how much they would get. Under this plan, the district locks a figure in place.
