Board approves Ohio State tuition freeze
Its welcome news for students and their parents. The Ohio State Board of Trustees voted on Friday in favor of a tuition freeze for all in-state undergrads. This marks the first time in 40 years that fees have held steady. The cost of room and board will also stay in place for both in and out-of-state students. Ohio State President Michael Drake says that freezes are part of his focused plan to make education affordable.
Tuition for out-of-state students will increase by 3.1% (jj)

OSU is issuing a tuition freeze. But before you start doing some sort of “lower student loan” dance, there are some details you should know…
This is the first time in roughly 40 years that the school has issued a total cost freeze (which includes tuition, fees, room and board). But it’s only for in-state, undergrads. Which makes sense, since they makeup most of the university. President Drake said in statement yesterday:
“With this step, we can offer some financial relief for the nearly 80 percent of our students who are from Ohio. Ohio State is proud to be a national leader on college affordability, but we can do even more.”
For those students, the cost of OSU will be frozen at $10,037 a year, or $11,666 for students living on campus. However, out-of-state students on main campus will see an increase of 3.1% ($27,362 a year), while those at regional campuses will see a 3.5% increase. And current international students will see a 3% increase ($28,362 a year). But incoming international students have it the worst, with a 6.4% increase ($29,302 a year).
However, all of these changes must be approved by the Board of Trustees in June. So, don’t get those checkbooks out just yet. (deb)
