Columbus State makes the cut…$2.5 million from the budget
Columbus State has announced plans to cut $2.5 million from their budget, a move that officials say needs to be taken quickly. Low enrollment figures look to be to blame. Spring 2015 enrollment for the community college is running nearly 10 percent lower than enrollment for spring 2014. Administrators think that Columbus State’s switch from quarters to a semester academic schedule is part of the reason for lower student figures. They also fault an improvement in the economy. Enrollment numbers in community colleges across the state have dropped as the economic situation has slowly rebounded in the last few years.
To accomplish their budgetary cuts, Columbus State says that some positions that are currently vacant will not be filled. A number of adjunct professor positions will also be eliminated. (jj)
