Spokane, Washington native Steve Wescott set out on a path from Seattle to Times Square in 2012 in an effort to raise awareness and funds for an orphanage that a friend had helped to establish in Kenya. For his journey, Steve took along a trusted companion named LeeRoy Brown…a goat. The pair (taking winters off) had logged more than 3,000 miles on their indirect path to New York.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that while stepping through the Buckeye State, LeeRoy became sick with some sort of stomach issue. Doctors and staff at the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center had been treating LeeRoy when his illness took a turn last week and the goat has now passed away.

Wescott has yet to decide if his walk will continue this year or will resume in 2016. But when the walk does continue, he plans to carry LeeRoy’s ashes with him.
