Columbus-based Cooper State bank is being purchased by Commerce National Bank (First Merchants Corp) of Muncie, Indiana. Cooper State first opened in Columbus in 2005 and currently has six branches in the Central Ohio area, primarily focused on personal accounts. Commerce National has branches in Indiana, the Chicago area and one here in Columbus. The local branch focuses mostly on business accounts. Commerce says that current Cooper State consumers will be able to take advantage of more banking services after the sale goes through. Look for rebranding of the banks this summer. (jj)
