Columbus’ new business growth spurt

Columbus’ new business growth spurt

It feels like every day, there’s another new business (or ten new businesses) starting here in Columbus. Big things are happening and here’s the proof.

For ten years, the Kauffman Index has been looked at as a respected measurement of startup activity in the U.S. Its a quick means of telling which cities are on the rise in terms of creating new businesses and judging just where the next great ideas or companies might come from. If the latest study is any indication, Columbus is growing by leaps and bounds in those departments. Since last year, we’ve jumped ten spots in the rankings from 22 to number 12. For comparison sake, Cleveland and Cincinnati finished well behind us (in the 30s). Here’s a look at the top ten:

  1. Austin, Texas
  2. Miami, Florida
  3. San Jose, California
  4. Los Angeles, California
  5. Denver, Colorado
  6. San Francisco, California
  7. New York, New York
  8. Houston, Texas
  9. San Diego, California
  10. San Antonio, Texas

In the state rankings, Ohio wasn’t so hot, placing 37th…and that was down from the previous year.  (jj)
