ODOT to post running death tally on highway signs

The Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are about to undertake a new method of creating awareness for the need for highway safety. Beginning this weekend, they’ll use the state’s 130 electronic highway message boards to keep a running tally of roadway deaths. Messages will alternate back-and-forth between a standard safety message and a death count.

If it seems a bit morbid, that’s probably the point. Agencies want to get your attention. They want you to be aware that the road can be a dangerous place and that people do lose their lives on it.

Death counts will appear on the message board from 9pm to 5am on weekdays and around the clock on weekends. Statistics will be updated on Thursday nights.  (jj)
