REI to keep doors closed on Black Friday
With so much attention focused every year on which stores will be open on Thanksgiving and which will not, and the debate over whether or not being open is an affront to families everywhere, outdoor retailer REI is taking a unique step. They’ve announced that they will not be open on Black Friday.
The day after Thanksgiving is generally considered the start of the holiday shopping season and is traditionally considered the biggest shopping day of the year. Still, the higher-ups at REI say that they see a different value in the day:
Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of the essential truth that life is richer, more connected and complete when you choose to spend it outside.
The chain says that they are encouraging their customers and their employees to spend the day outdoors. (Employees will be paid for the day, even though they’re being instructed not to come to work.)
The decision affects all of REI’s 143 stores including both Central Ohio locations…at Easton and on Sawmill Road. (jj)
