The Columbus Board of Education unanimously passed a $1.26 billion budget Tuesday night to cover the 2015-2016 school year. Unlike budgets in previous years, this one had specifics including money for new math textbooks and the hiring of more than 100 employees to work with special-ed, gifted and non-English speaking students. For the first time in years, the budget actually lays out where the money is going. For some time, the board has given its approval to vague budgets that left most of the spending discretion to superintendents. With the plan passed Tuesday night, any desired substantive changes in spending would require a return visit to the board for approval. (jj)
