Start learning those hand signals, bike lanes coming to OSU

It might be getting a little bit safer to bike around Columbus. Well, if you’re on campus that is. The city is getting its first protected bike lane, as part of a plan to resurface Summit/3rd and 4th St. Bike lanes are going in along Fulton and Hudson St. and a 1.4 mile section of Summit St. will be a protected two-lane bikepath. Cyclists will still have to pedal alongside cars in some areas, but the lanes between Fulton and Hudson will have pavement markings that separate cyclists from cars.

There are also plans to install 16 “queue boxes.” These boxes are pavement markings that make it possible for a cyclist wanting to take a left turn into the intersection during a green light to wait in a clearly marked space; cyclists wait in these queues until the light in the opposite direction turns green and then merge with the traffic behind them.

The bike lanes and street resurfacing is scheduled to start this summer and be done by October. (deb)
